Search Tips From HeinOnline

HeinOnline Blog - Don’t know where to start your research in HeinOnline? Try our One-Box Search!  We often get questions about where to find certain documents in HeinOnline. If you don’t know where to start your research in HeinOnline, try our One-Box Search.  The One-Box Search is found at the top of your subscribed libraries page. It functions as an advanced search box but searches across all of your subscribed libraries. Therefore, it is great to begin your research with if you don’t know what collection what you are looking for is found in.  See example here. Another way to determine where to begin your research is to use the question mark icons found next to the collection titles also on your subscribed libraries page. Clicking the question mark icon reveals a short description of what is found in that collection. HeinOnline Tip of the Day: Use the Citation Navigator In most collections in HeinOnline, there is a Citation Navigator tool. Therefore, if you have a citation, you can quickly insert it into HeinOnline’s Citation Navigator and instantly access the article or work you are looking for. Below, we will highlight the Law Journal Library Citation Navigator and the US Statutes at Large Library Citation Navigator. Law Journal Library Citation Naviagtor: Use the Citation Navigator found in the Law Journal Library to quickly pull up a page in the Law Journal Library. Use the first option to enter the volume from your citation, the abbreviation, and the page number. Click “Get Citation” to open the page in HeinOnline. Or, use the second option to copy and paste your citation directly in the field, which will also open the page in HeinOnline. US Statutes at Large Library Citation Navigator: Quickly pull up a Public Law  The citation navigator found in the US Statutes at Large let’s you quickly enter, and jump to the public law you are searching for. The tool is split into two parts to accommodate the different formats used over the years to cite public laws. The top section can find laws using the naming method used by the 57th Congress to present (ex: 87-5 or Chapter 1, 57 Congress), while the bottom section can find laws using the naming method used by the 1st-56th Congresses. If the Public Law you are searching for is from after the 57th Congress, simply enter the public law number to pull up the public law. Or, if the public law is from the 1st – 56th Congress, use the second option. Enter the Chapter and Year of Enactment to pull up the public law.

Prior to joining the Golden Gate Law Library staff in 2011, Jodi taught legal research and writing courses to college students at John F. Kennedy University in Pleasant Hill and Heald College in San Francisco. Prior to that, she practiced plaintiff's-side employment law with a mid-sized firm in San Francisco and Minneapolis for two years. While practicing law, Jodi also served as a pro-bono supervising attorney at the Legal Aid Society-Employment Law Center in San Francisco. Jodi attended UMN Law School as a MacKinnon & Stone Scholar, was a staff member of Law & Inequality: A Journal of Theory and Practice, received the Best Brief Award in legal writing, spent a semester studying international human rights law in Costa Rica, and chaired a committee that persuaded the law school to offer a new seminar in reproductive rights law. Jodi is currently pursuing an MLIS at San Jose State University.

Prior to joining the GGU staff, Jennifer worked as a librarian in law firms including Heller Ehrman, Reed Smith, and Morrison & Foerster. In her law firm work, Jennifer has taught courses, given presentations and researched a broad range of issues. She also worked as a librarian in Washington, DC at both National Public Radio and the Law Library of Congress. In law school, she received a Certificate in Dispute Resolution in addition to her JD. Jennifer joined the staff at GGU in the fall of 2011.
